Merrill W. Sherman is President and CEO of Bancorp Rhode Island, Inc. and its wholly-owned subsidiary,Bank Rhode Island. Prior to her work at Bank Rhode Island, Ms. Sherman served as President and CEO of two other New England banks and spent 17 years at a major regional law firm. Ms. Sherman is a director of the Providence Journal Company, the Providence and Worcester Railroad Company and Bradford Soap International, Inc. She is involved in numerous community service initiatives and serves on many civic and charitable boards. Ms. Sherman was the 2001 recipient of the Ernst & Young New England Entrepreneur of the Year in Financial Services. Her civic and humanitarian efforts have resulted in her receipt of the Encore Award from the Arts & Business Council of Rhode Island, the Donor Services Award from the United Way of Southeastern New England, the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the National Jewish Medical and Research Center and the Business Leadership Award from the Providence Business News. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College and the University Of Denver College Of Law, she also holds an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from Johnson & Wales University.
